A new digital experience for southern New England communities to support the blending of Brown University and the Lifespan Network of hospitals.

 

Project Overview

As Brown University and Lifespan Health Network united to form Brown University Health, the organization needed a cohesive digital presence that reflected this new era of collaboration and care. The goal: create an online experience that supports both the community and internal teams through a unified, modern, and accessible design system.

The Challenge

The merger required integrating two established brands—Brown University and Lifespan—each with its own identity, audiences, and web infrastructure. Our task was to redesign both the public-facing website and internal intranet, aligning them under the new Brown University Health brand while maintaining clarity, trust, and ease of use for patients, staff, and partners.

Our Approach

Branch Boston led the UX, UI, and digital brand implementation. We began by extending the visual language—expanding the color palette and typography system—to translate the new brand into a flexible, digital-first environment.

We then developed a series of modular templates and content blocks that empower internal administrators to manage content independently, ensuring scalability and long-term sustainability. Every design decision prioritized accessibility, clarity, and connection to the community.

By analyzing website traffic patterns, we saw that users consistently sought fast access to key content. To support this behavior, we incorporated prominent quick links on the global homepage and repeated them across all hospital location pages, alongside essential contact information. This ensured the most frequently accessed content was always front and center.

We also branded the Be Well blog to have it’s own custom logo identity that is carried through the blog imagery and member outreach emails. 

The Outcome

The result is a modern, intuitive digital experience that distinguishes Brown University Health within a crowded healthcare landscape. The redesigned website communicates credibility and compassion while offering streamlined access to essential services and information—supporting more than 1,620 locations across southern New England and strengthening the organization’s reputation as a trusted community healthcare provider.
